ABOUT CHEROKEE VILLAGE
In January 1997, registered voters in Cherokee Village began collecting petition
signatures to incorporate the area. The Village lies within the boundaries of
two Arkansas counties, Sharp and Fulton.
In December of that year, the Sharp County Judge denied the petition to
incorporate. The Fulton County Judge granted the petition and the Fulton County
portion of the Village incorporated as Cherokee Village West, a city of 611
people, in January 1998.
The newly elected city council immediately drafted an ordinance of annexation.
In April 1998, registered voters in both county portions of the Village
overwhelmingly approved annexation. Cherokee Village West became the united
(Sharp and Fulton Counties) city of Cherokee Village. It is now the largest city
(2000 census: 4648 people) in the tri-county area (Sharp, Fulton, and Izard).
After several months of conducting business from the Mayor's residence, the city
leased office space in Town Center and opened City Hall.
The city has since purchased a larger building in the Town Center and all City
Offices, offices of Mayor, Recorder / Treasurer, Planning & Zoning, Cherokee
Village Municipal Court, and city council meeting room...along with the Police
Department, are located in the newly renovated CITY HALL.
Home to 4,600+ residents serviced by a full time police force, four fire stations, the Spring River paramedic ambulance service, a fully staffed hospital and doctors clinic and a shopping center.
